How to use this calculator

The advertised jackpot is not usually the amount a winner actually keeps. This estimator gives you a plain-English estimate of what may be left after federal and state taxes.

1
Choose your federal filing status.Select how you file your federal income tax return, such as single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, or head of household.
2
Select the state where the ticket was purchased. The state lottery that issued the winning ticket may withhold or tax the prize. Your resident state may also have rules, so this is an estimate, not personal tax advice.
3
Compare cash option and annuity estimates. The cash option is estimated as one lump-sum prize. The annuity estimate uses an average annual payment because actual annuity schedules can vary.

Why the calculator shows more than 24% federal tax

For large lottery prizes, 24% federal tax is typically withheld upfront, but that withholding may not cover the winner's final federal tax bill. A jackpot can push the winner into the top federal tax bracket, currently 37% for very high income.

That does not mean the entire prize is simply taxed at a flat 37%. Federal income tax is progressive, so different portions of income are taxed at different rates. This calculator estimates the 24% withheld upfront plus the additional federal tax that may be due later.

Plain-English version: the extra federal tax is often roughly another 13% on a very large cash prize, but the exact estimate is slightly lower because the tax brackets are graduated.
