The advertised jackpot is not usually the amount a winner actually keeps. This estimator gives you a plain-English estimate of what may be left after federal and state taxes.
Why the calculator shows more than 24% federal tax
For large lottery prizes, 24% federal tax is typically withheld upfront, but that withholding may not cover the winner's final federal tax bill. A jackpot can push the winner into the top federal tax bracket, currently 37% for very high income.
That does not mean the entire prize is simply taxed at a flat 37%. Federal income tax is progressive, so different portions of income are taxed at different rates. This calculator estimates the 24% withheld upfront plus the additional federal tax that may be due later.
